The approach involves deliberately overlooking specific actions that are deemed undesirable, such as mild disruptions or inappropriate requests for attention. By withholding attention—both positive and negative—it is believed that the behaviour will diminish over time, as the child learns that such actions do not yield the desired response. This strategy is often coupled with the reinforcement of positive behaviour, where appropriate actions are acknowledged and praised, thus encouraging more constructive forms of engagement.
